home.

Morning dawned with the sound of water slapping the lake, and we piled into cars packed high with suitcases and boxes, people clustered and stuffed next to seats holding bags. We've shaken off the dust of the week and pulled off flip-flops worn ragged. The smell of the water still lingers and we've come back with more freckles than we can count, sand between our toes, and hair bleached blonde from the sun. Tonight, we'll unfold rumpled clothes and breathe in the smell of the lake, unpacking memories and stories that we'll tuck away in drawers, hang up in closets, and put away until it is time to pull them out, unfold them gently, and smooth the wrinkled fabrics free of their tales.

For now, we are home. In a house that seems enormous, with the living room filled with half-unpacked suitcases. The laundry is running downstairs instead of the sound of the lake splashing the shore. In the place of the dusty dirt road to grandpa and grandma's cabin, we have a backyard grown tall and green in our absence. We all have a bittersweet taste in our mouths, as we sip water bottles and drink the last of the sweet tea snapples. We are sad to be gone yet excited to be home, and for that reason, we will toss "remember when..."'s around the table for weeks to come, swapping stories like trading t-shirts with your sister. And when the fish fry rolls around, we will pull out the moments we've tucked away and relive them with laughter.

Fifty one weeks until Woodland.

lately... (lots of summer love here)

we've been doing a whole lot lately...

playing games and running outside and making summery treats (rice krispie bars, icecream with fruit, anything grilled, etc...)

getting freckly and tan(ish) lying on the hot slats of our deck
reading books all afternoon
having random dance parties to Marry You and We Are Young (which just came on pandora and I am now jamming to it) and Lakehouse
stopping by walmart to pick up fishing gear

painting our toenails pinks and purples and blues
eating fruit until it comes out of our ears
and subsequently finishing off a whole watermelon in a day

making lists and prepping for next week
watching our sweet neighbor baby emma

her squishy face! oh my. i can't handle her squishy face.
drinking tea and coffee and homemade lemonade
so mostly just summery stuff
which is fine by me.

we've also been getting ready for woodland
(eight days!!!)
which has kept us busy
in a good way.

i'm a bit tired because i went to bed late and
i've been getting up at 5:30 every morning (okay...ALMOST every morning)
i work out for an hour and then have breakfast.
i luck out because then i get the good food. y'know, big family stuff. ;)

another benefit of getting up early is
being awake just as the sun comes up
i had my Bible time on the porch today,
munching on an apricot and eating blueberries like there's no tomorrow
the sun made dappled patterns on the stone from the leaves
birds were chirping
AND THERE WERE NO MOSQUITOES
it was beautiful

it's been a bit quiet lately
because we have been enjoying the weather
(not the mosquitoes though
at nighttime, the world is teeming with them
evil little monsters)
and doing summery stuff
which is just the best

summer, you may just be my favorite

what have you been up to lately?

summer list, 2012

june instagrams
It's time for summer lists! They've become a yearly thing (see 2010 & 2011 here) and I love writing them. Scribbling notes of what I want to do each summer helps to solidify my plans and dreams and bring them to fruition...not to mention it's enjoyable to verbalize them. This summer is chock-full of a ridiculous amount of exciting and fun things, so my list this year is definitely reflecting that. It's like writing down a giant to-do list and getting to cross each and every item off! And they're not like, "clean the bathroom. finish the history paper. respond to emails." They're actually things you're excited to complete.

My list this year is a lot simpler and more list-like than previous years, which is completely fine with me. I'm in the process of cutting back a lot regarding media, and I'm trying to simplify my life, so I've been finding my words have been echoing that lately. (which is completely fine by me, as a simple life is pretty close to my heart)

Go to Woodland (12 days!)
Bike to Dairy Queen
Stay up late watching Chick Flicks with Chloe
Go on a photo adventure
Have a picnic
Spend a few days camping
Make a summer playlist
Cook something new
Play card games with my family until we go crazy
Paint my nails (still in the process of growing them out)
Start and complete a summer project (summer book?)
Get freckly :)
Take my sisters out for coffee
Treat my brothers to icecream
Have a water fight
Cover an entire sidewalk with chalk
Buy my fishing license ("old" enough for this now ;))
Learn to fishtail
Work in mom's garden or grampa's garden
Go to a fair
Travel (TX in July!)
Go roadtrippin' somewhere
Wake up early and start my day in prayer and the Word
Be media free for a week (or weekend)
Go summer shopping!
Do some more personal shoots
Read twenty-five books (random number, just because ;))
Finish fifteen poems
Start sketching again
Chill out
Have more random jam sessions with Ry & Seth
Take pictures of both of my grandparents homes
Go swimming in lakes, pools, oceans (crossing my fingers for that last one :))
Go through my closet + stuff and get rid of old junk
Watch more sunrises and sunsets
Eat icees
and completely cliche but totally true...

live out every day like it's my last

(fully, wholly, deeply, intentionally, passionately, purposefully, and truly)

what's on your summer list?

fifteen days

photos from Woodland 2011

Sometimes, when I'm at Woodland, I sit down on the docks in the late afternoon, as everyone is showering or shaking sand from their swimsuits or starting to cook supper as smoke drifts lazily from the grill. I slip away from grampa and gramma's cabin, shutting the creak of the screen door quietly, and walk along the dusty dirt road back to our cabin, down to our dock. It's quiet except for the hum of the lakeside, the occasional whir of boats, and the sound of loons echoing their songs across the lake. My flipflops slap on the thin warped wood of the dock and I take them off, plunking myself down at the edge of the dock. I drop my feet in the water and splash the lake across my face and breathe in deep as the sky.

It's in those moments that I feel so very blessed, and my heart is so very full. It's in those moments that I feel wholly myself. And it's in those moments that I feel as if I'm home. A place I love, filled with people I love, for one week that I love like crazy.

This will be my seventeenth year at Woodland.

Fifteen days to go.

I am so excited.

in less than a year...

...I'll be here.
woodland
But for now, now I'm home.
woodland
It's hard to believe that this morning I was trekking along the muddy ground, walking the path from my grandparent's cabin to my own. Or that simply hours ago, I stood on the dock under a slate gray sky; I can still feel the water on my fingertips, the harsh wind whooshing by, the smell of the world after it rains.
woodland
I miss it. At the beginning of the week, I wrote in my journal that going to Woodland was almost like coming home. And it is. This was my sixteenth year and even though it's just ended, I'm so excited for next year. For another chapter to my story.
woodland
Less than three hundred and sixty five days until I'm back. Feeling doused in memories like lake water splashing something fierce. And now, off to unpack and journal and breathe in the reality that I'm home. Joyful and sad at the same time. And that's okay.
woodland
Indescribably grateful for the week. Blessed.
woodland
So much more to share with you, so many thoughts and ideas, dreams and plans that seemed spun out of sand, built into castles on the shore. Many more pictures to post and tales to tell, but for now, sitting and soaking it all in.

Loads of love,
Hannah

late night thoughts at woodland

woodland
I'm sitting in my grandparent's cabin right now, lying on the big orange comforter in their bedroom. The windows with the white paint are open and I can hear the distant hum of boats, slicing through waves. The water laps at the shore and smoke from bonfires just beginning, fills the air.

And I sit here. There is a sweet serenity in listening to the lake's roar, the sound of the birds chirping, the whooshing way the wind blows through pine trees laden heavy with needles. Blessed stillness. Beautiful peace.

The rest of the family is fishing but I was tired so I decided to stay back at the cabin tonight. From out the windows, I can see the first soft tints of the grey sky being touched with flame, sun setting and clouds turning orange and purple, light filling shadows with warm hues.

Woodland always gives me a new perspective. The emphasis on family, the simplicity and sweetness of life, the feeling of fellowship with one another throughout everything. Be it through washing dishes by hand, swimming to the raft, fishing from the docks, or laughing in the early morning while eating breakfast.

More than anything, it makes me realize that this is what life is supposed to be like -- uncluttered, filled with family, days spent living to the full. Breath by breath, throughout whatever may come.

this is real life.

I'm so grateful.

Talk to you all in a few days.
Loads of love,
Hannah

In one year's time...

...I'll be here again.

But right now, I'm home.

I don't know how to begin writing this--my thoughts are swirling around and getting tangled and leaving me with such a sense of melancholy. Woodland is like a small glimpse at what Heaven will be. It's a place of so much joy and laughter and it's filled with life.

It's always been hard for me to come home and realize that life still went on without us. But for one week, time was stopped for us and we were there, enjoying family and celebrating life.

How can I explain what Woodland means, what we did, how we lived, what the week was? It's like trying to grasp at and hold a cloud--you can see it, but it slips through your fingers and leaves you drenched with it.

At the moment, I just want to sit and soak it all in. Because the week was awesome. It rocked--majorly. Every year, it gets better and better. And this week was no exception. I don't know how we manage to do so much in so little time; at the end of the week, it feels like it's gone so fast, and then I look back and can't believe how much we've done.

And now I'm home. Home and a little melancholy. But that's okay. Because life is so big, and beautiful and full...and it's good. It's so so so good that I can't even find enough words to describe how blessed I feel. And, I'm gonna soak it all in.

Completely.
